Our classroom community is diverse with varying ethnic backgrounds and life experiences that are incredibly unique. Our student population consists of 62% low-income students in need of free or reduced-price lunch. Most of the students in my class have few experiences that encourage the development of fundamental skills to learn.
Nevertheless, they have a strong interest in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics subjects.
As a teacher in a Title I school, my students have less access to learning materials and experiences, including books, computers, stimulating toys, skill-building lessons that all play a role in creating a positive classroom environment.
Despite the many challenges they face a promising sign have been the academic progress they strive for every day. Their effort and constant support from their teachers have shown their academic skills are growing. It is essential to continue to foster this growth by providing them with a safe and secure learning environment that fosters intellectual development, creativity, and friendships.
To create a positive literacy environment, the supplies in the classroom need to be replenished because we are completely out of these essential materials: an electric sharpener, pencils, dry erase markers and erasers. It is vital for students to have access to these materials to complete their classwork and homework. We are constantly scrounging for pencils and erasers everywhere we go. If we see a pencil in the hallway we immediately pick it up and label it with our room number.
Our electric pencil sharpener broke and we are using leftover manual pencil sharpeners that a student brought from a birthday party they attended.
