Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My students live on the west side of Chicago. They are eager to come to school to learn and do their best. Their families all want the best for their children, too, but the community has many challenges. Too many children have experienced violence and loss of friends and family members. Day to day struggles can be overwhelming at times.
School is their safe place.
They want to help to make our classroom work, and our work together is important because it makes our classroom a shared community space where we all work together and help each other. They are excited to learn how to read! It is thrilling to see them grow from small first graders at the beginning of the year to big, competent kids who know how to read chapter books and write about their reading.
My Project
Sharp pencils are one of the most basic tools of First Grade. With all of the constant sharpening, even the pencil sharpener gets dull and stops working well.
A new pencil sharpener will keep my students supplied with sharp pencils all year long.
They also need sturdy plastic folders to keep their papers in, Band-Aids for small cuts, and other supplies such as tape and gallon-sized ziplock baggies that we use to hang posters and keep supplies organized. Your donation will be much appreciated and used to stock our classroom with the essentials that we use each and every day.
