Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Our school is located in a large, urban city with a diverse population. Most of my students come from single-parent families or from families where both parents work long hours to support their families. Often times, several generations live together in the same house.
Many of my students come from homes where English is not the only language spoken, and many have come to us from other countries.
The majority of my students receive a free lunch. I am lucky enough to teach an awesome group of middle school students who are creative, eager, and enthusiastic. They are always interested in learning more about a topic and constantly challenge me to be on my toes. I want to teach my kids the required subject matter, but I also want to teach them to be themselves, have fun learning and to love reading! Thank you for joining us on our journey.
My Project
My students are awesome! They are enthusiastic, fun-loving, and inquisitive. They put all their effort into everything they do. I don't want them to be restricted in their efforts because they lack basic school supplies. Only about 25% of my students come to school on the first day with all of their requested supplies. Some come with a few items but most come with nothing but a pen and an old notebook. I want to be able to give them what they need to be successful throughout the year, but it can be expensive.
With this project, I am hoping to acquire some of these supplies that my students will need to have an amazing and productive school year.
We need large Post-It paper, colored pencils and markers to complete projects, interactive notebooks, and anchor charts. Basic supplies like glue sticks, scissors, and rulers will be used to help my students organize information in notebooks and to complete various projects based on the novels we read like character charts and timelines. Post-its will allow my kids to take notes and annotate while reading novels, this is the main way they work to improve their comprehension skills. Different colored pens and highlighters will allow my students to take notes highlighting important information in a variety of specific colors.
