My students are representative of a typical rural community. Most of them are on free and reduced lunch, as our school is a Title 1 school. Our school system is an integral pillar of the community because our students depend so heavily on how the school can help them in various areas of their life.
Our students do not let their circumstances determine their life choices; instead, they come to school ready to learn so that they can make a difference in the world.
My students believe in the power of education and have seen it effect change in their lives and in the lives of other people they know. I am encouraged every day by their hard work and endurance.
My Project
My students are hard workers who come in each day eager to learn how to write. It is my hope to equip them to the best of my ability and one way I know to do that is through this amazing community. In earlier years I often grew frustrated with students who came unprepared to class without a pencil. Often these students are made fun of by the teacher and other students in the class.
In my classroom, I believe every student has the right to have access to pencils and a pencil sharpener.
When I first began teaching I had a pencil sharpener from college and that poor tattered sharpener is still the one we are using. I bought 200 pencils at the start of the school year but my writers have blazed through them. We are desperately in need of a new pencil sharpener and some new pencils in order to appropriately equip my writers for their tasks in school each day.
When my students found out I was submitting a Donors Choose project they became very excited and asked if I might add Kleenex tissues to our list of supplies as well, as our school stash has run out entirely. They believe in the power of this community and that is a beautiful thing.
