My students need pencils for their daily journal writing and for creating their rough drafts of narratives, expository essays, and persuasive essays.
My students need pencils to create their rough drafts of narratives, persuasive essays, and expository essays. Many do not have the financial support to purchase school supplies.
I teach writing to seventh graders.
We write weekly essays alternating between narratives, persuasive essays, and expository essays. I incorporate current news events into my writing lessons rather than using prefabricated writing prompts. This has allowed my students to truly stretch their thinking and their ability to express their ideas.
Many of my students are living in a low-income neighborhood which has had a history of crime and violence.
Yet these students are resilient. They have proven over the past two years to be as capable, if not more so, than their counterparts in the district's higher-income schools. They are excited for the future despite their current lot in life. The goal for our district for this school year is to improve all student writing scores. The students at my school are showing steady, continued growth on their writing assessments as we are nearing the end of the first semester. They are finally beginning to believe that their ability to succeed as writers is, in no way, controlled by their environment.
All children have an imagination that needs to be translated to the written word. No child's creativity should ever be stifled due to the lack of basic writing supplies. Many of my students face financial hardship which prevents them from purchasing items as seemingly unimportant as a pencil.
This project will ensure that all children have a pencil every single day.
This project will help my students to create despite the economic reality of their current living conditions. Students will be provided with assurance that their words will make it to paper and that their ideas will definitely be heard.
