Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My students are primarily from low socioeconomic households. Our school district has 90+% second language learners who need a wide variety of experiences to succeed. Our school is 40 miles away from the nearest shopping.
Our district provides little in the way of art supplies, P.E.
equipment, or project supplies. I have students who are gifted in many different areas, and it is my goal to help students succeed and have diverse experiences. I end up spending a lot of my own money.
My Project
Many of my students are not able to bring school supplies from home and often they have a difficult time being responsible for their classroom tools. I devised this method to encourage them to be mindful of their pencils and provide them with a specific place to keep them.
I give them a different color pencil each month, and they are expected to store their pencil in their pencil pouch when they are not using it.
They are then rewarded at the end of the month when they still have their pencil.
My students have greatly improved in their efforts to be responsible (and they love the different colors!)
