My Project

My students are excited learners that would LOVE having pen pals! Another teacher in Alabama is excited about starting this journey with our third grade class. Having a pen pal promotes many key skills, including reciprocation (a letter filled with all "me" and no questions does not make for a good pen pal relationship!), empathy and mutual concern. It also fosters the ability to search for and find common bonds, a key element of true friendship.

Having a letter-creating station complete with envelopes, stickers, bookmarks, and coloring materials would make this pen pal experience so EXCITING!

The students already are thrilled to be writing to a real audience and making a new friend. That feeling of giving a sticker, picture, or bookmark along with the snail mail letter would be even better! This teaches real life lessons about how to communicate with someone new. Not to mention that students will want to do their personal best and edit their writing carefully, which is an added bonus!

These materials in addition to some fun 100 day projects to sent to our Pen Pal friends will be a lesson they will never forget. I think authentic learning like this is so important to developing character.
