This year we will be involved in sending postcards to pen pals across the United States. As part of the pen pal project we will learn about the United States and the different kinds of weather the regions in the United States have. The children will send out postcards with information about their state and school. They will also write about the kinds of weather that we have in our state. In return we will ask our pen pals to tell us about their state, school and weather.
We will post in our room all of the postcards that we receive. We will write in our journals about the kinds of weather our pen pals have and where our pen pals are from. We will be able to compare likenesses and differences between our weather and the pen pal's weather. We will also learn about the different states. We will use the information we receive to go along with our science kit "Air and Weather" that we use in second grade. We will also use the information we receive in Math class by making charts, graphs and word problems, etc.
I teach math and science to 42 second graders. I have a morning math and science class and an afternoon math and science class. Our school is a rural school in South Carolina. We have grades K through 8th grade at our school.
For this project we need composition books to use for journals(42); markers- any size (at least 20 packs); crayons (24 boxes of 24 count crayons in each box); copier paper (1 case); index cards -- 3" x 5" and 4" x 6" (3 packs of each); envelopes (long white standard); 4 one time use cameras (35 mm with 24 exposures)and postage stamps (each child will bring 2 postages stamps to be used for this project).
The students will learn alot about different kinds of weather across the United States. They will learn about the United States throught the postcard pictures. But best of all they will have a pen pal friend, a weather seeker !!!!
