My Students

My students love reading Latin and learning about ancient Greeks and Romans and their mythology!

Our school is a Chicago Public School where all students begin studying Latin in kindergarten and more advanced Latin I coursework in grade three.

We are located in a diverse neighborhood, but students are bused in from all over the city. A tiny school of ten classrooms, we make the most of all our resources! Students come to school every day eager to learn and grow!

My Project

My students love reading! I have an active lending library, filled with modern myths, re-tellings of ancient myths, history, and biography. Although our love of this genre may start with Percy Jackson and the Lightning Thief, we go well beyond that title to lesser-known, but no less well-loved volumes.

With so many living authors publishing highly sought-after titles, my Bibliothecula (little library) is expensive to keep current!

Everyone always wants to be the first to read the newest release, and I try to purchase multiple copies of the most desired books. Lately, I have scaled back by buying only one copy or delaying my purchases. I would like to update my collection to allow all students looking for these books the opportunity to read them.

A brief description of the books:

George O'Connor's newest Olympians graphic novel Artemis. This series is incredibly well-researched (especially his "Geek/Greek Notes"!), interconnected, and extremely engaging!

Rick Riordan's Trials of Apollo, Book 2, the latest in Percy Jackson's saga.

Riordan's Magnus Chase Norse mythology series, book 2. Riordan is amazing in the scope of his mythological portrayals!

The graphic novel of Riordan's Son of Neptune. The original is from 2011, but this graphic version is an exciting addition to the Riordan collection!

Camp Half-Blood Confidential, a Percy Jackson ancillary volume.

The End of Olympus, the final book in a series about Pegasus and friends. Students love the female protagonist Emily, as well as the adventures!

Books 12 and 13 of Heroes in Training, a delightfully silly "alternate mythology" series that portrays all the Olympian gods as ten-year-olds searching for their roles.

Books 5 and 6 in Beasts of Olympus, which follows the adventures of mythology through the perspective of Pandemonius, a boy caring for the immortal monsters that are (unjustly!) vanquished in the myths.
