Pedometers to Promote Exercise and Academics

My students need 30 pedometers to encourage them to have healthy lifestyles and to enable me to plan math and social studies lessons around the miles that they walk each day.

My Students

I am a 5th and 6th grade teacher at a Title One school in Mesa, Arizona. Many of my students do not get the physical activity or exercise that they need and many of them are low in math. My students love hands-on activities and love to do projects that help them connect with their world.

A lot of my students go home and sit down in front of screens for for the rest of the afternoon and evening.

I would like to help them come up with ways to move, exercise, and have fun. I would also like to help them connect exercise with all of the subject areas.

My Project

I would like for each of my students to have a pedometer. I want to go outside for a few minutes each day with the students to either walk or run, then back inside and do math activities and other academic activities with the data.

Students will focus in class better after having some time to run and enjoy the fresh air outside.

We will use this data when we cover the statistics standards and will use the data when we talk about unit rate. We will calculate miles per hour and kilometers per hour and work with converting units.

We will also cover social studies standards as we look at a map of the world and find places of historical significance and determine how long it would take us to get there by foot, by plane, or by car.

These pedometers will truly provide students with cross-curricular connections.
