My students are part of a close knit small community that have experienced natural disasters (2 floods) and the relocation of many businesses. Despite that, the community, along with students, faculty and staff have supported our Family and Consumer Sciences (FACS) program.
The SV FACS content is an experiential learning program from 6th to 12th grade preparing students with strategies for success.
The focus of the middle and high school programs are to help students make informed choices with the goal of healthy independent living.
My Project
Many of my students have different cognitive, social and emotional, and learning disabilities that disrupt their own personal learning and their learning environment. The use of stationary bike with a desktop enables a student to have a physical outlet that reduces behavioral distractions and increases academic performance.
It has been proven that physical exercise helps to oxygenate the brain and releases endorphins.
Endorphins are naturally occurring brain chemicals that make you feel good. Feeling good and a well oxygenated brain helps to increase learning, comprehension and attention span. The stationary bike desks are quiet when in use so it will not disrupt the classroom environment.
Students will be able to sign out 20 minute "bike blocks" and add to a class total for miles pedaled. I can also create a graphic that demonstrates the increase in class averages while the bike has been used. Students will be motivated to excel personally and contribute to the increasing the class average.
