This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
My curious, motivated and inspiring students are eager to learn every day. My school qualifies for universal free breakfast and lunch due to our 90% free or reduced-price lunch status. Our students and their families live in an economically disadvantaged community which is too often the site of violent crime. Every teacher in my school does everything that we can to make our classrooms safe, and engaging centers of learning. My inspiring and inspired students deserve every opportunity to experience hands-on learning.
My Project
One key to academic success is the ability to stay focused and on task for continuous periods of time. In first grade, we describe this as having stamina. Sometimes young learners have a need to move and if it's not addressed in my lesson plans, they will find a way to make it happen-- sometimes at the expense of remaining engaged in the lesson. I plan for regular movement breaks throughout the day, but some students need those kinds of breaks more frequently or for longer intervals.
The addition of a DeskCyle to our classroom will give students opportunities to take a physical break within the room.
In addition to working off energy, I'm counting on my students recognizing that biking and other physical activities are healthy habits they can follow for a lifetime.
