My students are endlessly curious about the world around them. They are voracious learners who love hands-on activities and exploring their environment. They are a great bunch of kiddos who, through no fault of their own, find themselves in situations that are less than ideal.
My students live in a high poverty metropolitan area.
Many of my students are bilingual, speaking both English and Spanish, and most of those students are called upon to be interpreters for their non-English speaking parents and relatives. They are also expected to help care for younger siblings when their parents are at work. They have a lot of responsibility at such a young age.
My Project
My students live in a very low socioeconomic area of town and don't have access to fresh vegetables and fruits. My goal for this year is that all of my students have a container garden to take home with them at the end of the year so they can grow healthy, nutritious food for their families. We were fortunate enough to have our previous projects funded and we received Aerogardens, seeds, and classroom greenhouses so that my students could begin to grow vegetables in the classroom. Now we need to implement the final phase of this project.
My students need to have fabric pots and potting soil for their plants so they can provide fresh, healthy fruits and vegetables for their families.
They need these requested fabric pots and potting soil to transplant their seedlings into so they can easily transport them outside at school when the weather turns warm then eventually home to their families.
