This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
I teach Pre-K and Kindergarten students in a unique public Montessori school which recently opened in 2018. I marvel at my student's desire for knowledge. They devour learning like it’s cupcakes! They are in the beginning stages of reading and writing. Writing seems to be a calming, creative process for them. In fact, they would write uninterrupted for hours if allowed to.
My students are an inquisitive bunch.
They enjoy math, science, poetry, art, and crafting. Often, they can be found crafting things for each other, creating a spirit of kindness and community among themselves. It’s amazing to see the good-will expressed between them.
My Project
Now more than ever, my classroom could use a Montessori Hand-Washing Station. The hand-washing station is designed to help children help themselves manage daily living tasks. It is important to get students involved in self-care activities such as hand-washing, especially now as our country experiences a pandemic.
Montessori materials are also timely, the Hand-Washing Station will make an important difference in my students' ability to contribute to keeping our learning environment clean.
The handwashing station will also give my students an opportunity to extend grace and courtesy to each other as they practice good hygiene. It is critical that students in my classroom community knowingly practice actions that benefit themselves and others.
