Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

I am an arts teacher at a public school in a neighborhood on the northwest side of Chicago known as Humboldt Park. It is a racially diverse area -(mostly African American and Puerto Rican population) and the neighborhood was once known as "gang territory" but has been in the transition stage for some time. I would like to have my students create mosaic garden stones which will be placed in the school's front yard/existing garden. The garden stones themselves would be the final product of many lessons aimed at teaching my students strategies and techniques for conflict resolution through art activities. They will create a "peace-path" on the school grounds and the peace path would serve as a constant reminder of the conflict resolution strategies that I aim to teach them. It would also serve as a vehicle for my students to take ownership of the school's surroundings and would aid in creating a sense of "community". Please help me create a peace path. I would like to begin this project on a "small scale" limiting the overall cost to be that of creating approximately 15 garden stones in this initial year. Each garden stone would be created by a team of two-three students, therefore the project would involve 30-45 students. If the project turns out to be a success I hope to repeat it on a yearly basis. Please take note that I am seeking funding for this initial year only.
