My students come from communities that span across 26 miles of coastline. As such a diverse group, the math program at my school provides students from all communities an opportunity to build a sage learning environment for learning mathematics.
More than one third of middle schoolers at my school struggle with mathematics; over 50 percent meet federal poverty guidelines.
Research shows that learning difficulties in general begin at the middle school level. Such difficulties are stressful with development and growth changes that also occur during the middle school years. At this age, students yearn for peer acceptance and are impacted by peer influence. The impact of federal poverty levels on students exponentially increases the impact of development and growth. In short, students in my classes have a lot working against them at such a young age in life.
My Project
All of the students who come into my math class have often failed math once or twice. They feel that they are not good at math and often express that they canʻt learn such a hard subject. Peace circles will allow me to build a community of learners by helping everyone in class get acquainted and build a culture of trust and understanding. Such circles contribute to open communication, relationship development, and community building. Peace circles create a space of trust, respect, belonging, mutuality, and reciprocity. Peace circles allow me to build a community of learners by helping everyone in get acquainted and build trust and understanding before teaching and learning take place.
By donating to my project, you will help student build relationships and problem solving skills and will ultimately help increase academic achievement.
Research shows that building relationships at this developmental stage in a students life is instrumental in cognitive development. Desk free chairs will help students create barrier free learning spaces. By doing so, students will be able to get acquainted, build understanding and trust, address issues and visions for themselves and our class, and develop a plan of action to increase their learning in math. Building relationships and understanding is only half of the battle to the academic success of my students, but it is a critical half. Creating a safe space for students to learn build student confidence and a community of support for better learning. My students need desk free foldable chairs in order to create and keep peace circles.
