My students need fidget toys and mirrors for our peace corner to help them when they need to recenter. They need mindfulness tools and a baby doll to learn about each other and themselves.
My students are creative, fun, and very smart people. They come from many different backgrounds. Every day, they work hard to learn all they can. I am so blessed to have gotten to see them grow so much since September.
We all need a place to get in touch with ourselves - whether that be a quiet space or guided mindfulness practice.
My students are learning how to do this every day. We are working as a class to recognize when we need to take a break and get back to our best selves so we can learn.
My Project
This project will help my students to get materials that will help them learn to cope with stress and hard times. We all face difficulties throughout our lives. I want to give my students tools to be able to recenter. We have been talking about the way our brains work, and how we cannot work when we have "flipped our lid."
I have been working on mindfulness with them this year through yoga and our class meetings.
I would like to introduce more independent activities that students can do when they need to recenter and get back on track to learn. This will include items for our peace corner where students can go to calm down or just to take a break. It will include mindfulness lessons and guided breathing with the chimes and stretchy ball. The baby doll will help them to learn about empathy with lessons about treating each other with care and love. I am looking forward to seeing how these strategies are carried into the rest of their lives. My goal for all of my students is that they know how to leave the world a little kinder than they found it. This starts with learning about loving and taking care of themselves.
