My students need 2 netbook computers, with laptop locks.
Doing science in 2012, requires a computer. My students need access to the Internet for research and MS Office for data analysis and publication. STEM careers are expected to increase faster than all other industries. To compete, my students need computers!
My students are curious, but have not had much opportunity to explore.
Most do not have a computer at home and have not yet learned that Goggle can be used for something more than sports stats. Our urban school serves 541 students with 24 out- dated computers. Remember dial up? In 1995 you get online faster than my students can boot these computers. They need modern computers in the classroom for daily use.
With a computer they will learn how to use MS Word, Excel, and PowerPoint. They will read others' research, download NASA data, program a flight computer, collect sensor data for our class terrariums, communicate with the Windowfarm community, share their results with each other and the world, and keep tabs on new discoveries. With a computer, they are scientists!
A computer is the most powerful scientific tool I can teach my students how to use.
The skills they will learn will help them the rest of their life.
They are not privileged teenagers. Without practice using a computer, my students don't stand a chance in the real world. You know this to be true. Please help me help them.
DonorsChoose makes it easy for anyone to help a classroom in need. Public school teachers from every corner of America create classroom project requests, and you can give any amount to the project that inspires you.
