My students need supplies such as paints, spoons, wiggly eyes, and more for our experiments and crafts for PBS (positive behavior) monthly activities throughout the year.

Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Do you remember how fun arts and crafts, or even a simple experiment making ooze, was when you were in school? With times as focused as they are on academia, the fourth grade would love to be able to share these experiences with all our students through allotted our once-a-month reward activity.
Our students are miracles of circumstance.
Living in the fifth poorest suburb of the United States isn't easy and they work so hard to overcome and succeed. With 95% free-and-reduced lunch, they are thrilled to pieces with the simplest of kindness shown to them. Also, we have a large population of Hispanic, mostly Mexican and Puerto Rican, and Haitian Creole students-- which always brings something new to the classroom. Behavior this year is wonderful, such sweet personalities and so willing to please you and reach for that reward at the end of every day/week/month. All of their background knowledge and experiences come from school-- the majority cannot afford to even step outside their home, if they have one. Because the students are so low in achievement, being new to the states and having to deal with the language barrier, our school's really firm focus is academics from 730am, when most of them arrive, until 315pm, when the final bus is called.
My Project
We are allowed to do an activity once a month with students, that does not have to be strictly school/standards-based learning. These days are reward days for those students who have earned 60 Hornet Bucks-- somewhat of a currency. We tried to create fun learning activities where they can experience something new and not realize they are learning, even if it's just patience and teamwork. For example, in October they will either be creating ice cream in a ball or oobleck-- chemistry-- and in November, pompom turkeys. The materials requested will allow us to focus more on the fun school can be and not worry about empty pocketbooks, the inability to provide for students- which is like not having things for our own children, or having enough for each student. These activities will inspire students to be creative, adventurous, respectful, reinforce how to follow directions and provide the needed connections in the brain to build/reinforce background knowledge.
I remember when I was in school being able to go on field trips, do experiments and explorations, have class pets, and just experience history and life.
Now, our students are not able to do these things and this is our once-a-month chance to have the freedom to allow our kids, our little family, the opportunity to be excited. These activities could inspire a child's creativity to be an artist, a designer, scientist, or more. The impact could be great if given the chance to grow.
