My students have their own unique personalities and they each have their own individual needs to achieve the next level of independence. Many of my students are nonverbal or have minimal verbal skills. They are being taught to use alternative and augmentative communication (AAC) to express themselves in whatever way they can to communicate with their peers and other people in their lives. Additionally, many students have limited motor control. Many students also have Behavior Intervention Plans and need appropriate reinforcers to promote positive and appropriate behaviors. Every one of these students accesses the curriculum and the classroom in their own special way and some need more support than others, but they all need support. The school has five sites across Brooklyn. The students that I serve attend a special education public school in a low income, high need, area of Brooklyn, NY. These are students with autism, cerebral palsy, down syndrome, and other developmental disabilities.

Whether we are speaking of positive or negative behavior, the consequences of that behavior will determine if it will increase or decrease.
As special educators, one of our main goals should be to increase positive behavior and replace negative behavior with behavior socially appropriate and positive. This will help maintain a positive classroom environment which encourages student attentiveness, learning and retention.
On a school wide level me school needs appropriate and motivating reinforcers like stickers, balls, timers and crayons for out students. My school has no budget for these items.
