Help me give my students lots of high-interest items like erasers, water bottle stickers, plush toys, bouncy balls, slime, bracelet kits, and other non-candy items that they can earn in our school's PBIS store.
Our middle school is a unique 3-story building that first opened its doors in 1977, but what makes our school special are the students and teachers that fill it each day. Our school is a mix of two neighborhood communities: one middle-class, and the other more impoverished. Many of our students come from stable homes, but many of our students also come to us from more difficult circumstances. Our school also houses two units of special education students who spend lots of their day out in regular education classes.
Compared to other neighboring middle schools, we have a more diverse population and more students eligible for free or reduced-price lunch, but our test scores are consistently higher.
The staff works hard to challenge the students to their full potential, and the kids rise to the expectations. We love to learn and have fun doing it. We work hard, and we play hard!
My Project
In our school, any time students are caught being awesome in some way our teachers hand out a "patriot buck." These tickets are the backbone of our school-wide positive behavioral intervention system. In the past, students would then enter those bucks into various prize drawings. We have been doing this for a few years now and last year it started to lose its effectiveness a bit. Then last year, we decided to shake things up by opening a full-blown PBIS prize store! Gone are the days when a "patriot buck" was only good for a chance in a long-shot drawing.
Students can now redeem each school buck for a prize in our new school store, and everyone's loving the change- particularly our most disadvantaged students on tier 2 and tier 3 of our behavioral intervention system.
Our school now houses several units of special needs students who experience an accommodated curriculum and they love the new school store. The students feel like they have so much more individual control over the way that they spend their bucks because they do! We used to offer a lot of candy, but now we've replaced that with high-interest, non-food items like fun erasers, bouncy balls, slime, plush toys, and all sorts of fun prizes that they can redeem their tickets for.
