I love my students. They make it wonderful to come to school everyday. They inspire me to be my best self at all times. We are considered a low socio-economic school. Every student receives free breakfast and lunch every day. However, that is just a label that outsiders have placed on us. Our school is rich in tradition, parent support, and student participation. Our faculty believes in educating the whole child.
Our junior high students serve as positive influences/mentors to the elementary school next door.
It is a sight to see an eighth grade football player stoop down to give a first grade student a high five. Just this morning I saw a seventh grade male give a scented pencil to a first grade girl. Her eyes lit up by that simple gesture.
My Project
Junior high can be a hard time for kids. They are just beginning to learn who they are and who they want to be. Our school makes it our mission to reward good behavior and good choices. Every teacher in the school utilizes the PBIS rewards app on their mobile device. When we catch someone "doing right", we scan the student's badge. The app keeps track of points school-wide. These points can be exchanged for events and goodies.
Once a month, we open "The Pirate's Cove" after lunch.
At the Pirate's Cove, students can trade in their points for snacks, drinks, and/or popsicles. As you can imagine, this store is expensive to maintain. This is where we need your help. In addition to my full course load, I manage the store. My shelves are already going bare. We need more snacks. I am requesting Airheads candy and a variety of chips.
Some of our students would not afford these luxuries if not for our PBIS program. These are special treats for them. Something so simple as a bag of chips will help some of our students stop and think before acting. Thank you.
