I am the literacy specialist at EES. I work with students in Kindergarten through grade three to close the gap in their literacy skills. Students are coming to school with fewer and fewer literacy-rich backgrounds and perhaps the most striking or pervasive element we see school-wide is their inability to pay attention. Since cell phones are the norm now, even for young children, people are spending less time talking to interacting with each other. Often times you see children with their parent's phones in the grocery stores, or out at restaurants. The other day I asked a large group of second graders what their favorite game was. After getting many answers that were computer related games, I clarified and said, I meant board games. They were quiet for a very long time. Only one student could tell me a game that she had played at home with her family. Imagine trying to teach students who can't pay attention. It makes learning for them almost impossible.
My Project
Imagine teaching a small group of disinterested, distracted students. No one is having a good time. The teacher is frustrated and the students are not engaged.
Now picture students sitting around a table laughing, talking and engaging with other students and the teacher all while PLAYING!
This is where games come in. Telling students to stop and pay attention doesn't support them. Teachers need a way to engage students while they're learning. What better way than learning games? Playing games reinforces turn-taking, paying attention, socialization, self-control, and conversation. Unfortunately, playing games is a resource that is underutilized in schools and is not being played in most homes. These games will be shared with all the teachers at school in order for ALL students to benefit. I would also demonstrate various games to parents at conferences so that they could play them at home with their children. Please help me give my students the benefit of learning in a fun, engaging way.
