My Students

My school is a culturally and academically diverse community with a population comprised of 24% English language learners (and growing) and 23% students with special needs. Many of our families are immigrants new to this country. Our immigrant population is comprised of Asian, Russian, Polish, Albanian, Arabic, Chinese, Hispanic, and Ukrainian. More than half of our students come from lower-income households. Many are military families as well. The community and our school were hit hard by Hurricane Sandy and many families are still trying to rebuild their homes and lives.

We celebrate and respect our diverse community and work diligently to make all of our newcomers feel accepted and welcome.

My Project

Shelby joined our staff in the 2019-2020 school year. She is our school comfort dog. She has been instrumental in keeping the students engaged, excited, and motivated during this unprecedented and unique this past school year.

The Pawsitively Social-Emotional Learning Curriculum is unique.

Here are some highlights of the curriculum:

-The Pawsitively Curriculum is arranged in units, which include lessons that explicitly teach SEL skills. In addition, students apply the skills using activities that include complex, real-world scenarios.

-The reading for information, speaking and listening, and writing standards are explicitly embedded throughout the curriculum. It is designed to be taught once per week during ELA, which provides time between lessons to apply the learning.

-Throughout the curriculum, Shelby can assist in deepening and strengthening SEL concepts.

-We believe all students benefit from SEL, so our program is designed to be used as a PBIS Tier 1 Intervention.

-Our curriculum is based on CASEL’s five core competencies.

Lessons and activities engage students by vicariously using Shelby to introduce SEL attributes.

-By first introducing a concept through Shelby, students are more trusting, open, and willing to share their thoughts and emotions.

The mission of Pawsitively SEL Curriculum is also our mission..."to provide a unique and innovative curriculum with the sole purpose of helping students acquire and effectively apply the social-emotional knowledge and skills necessary to be more successful in school and in life."
