My students are in grades K-5 with a variety of individual needs and they need 6 measurement centers, a time learning center, card bank, and problem solving clock books.
This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
I work in an inner-city school in North Carolina. I teach Exceptional Children, also known as Special Education. I work with 30 students throughout the day k-5. Our school is in a high-need community.
Since my students come to me because they have a BIG need in math, I don't use the same textbooks that they use in their regular classroom. Everything has to be hands-on and very step-by-step for the students to understand. This proposal is to help with time and measurement.
Using these centers and manipulatives I will able to create math problem specific for my students as a small group or as individuals. The students will be able to use these centers in order to better understand measurement. Most of the centers have directions and give ways for the students to learn measurement and time in a hands-on way. The students can actually fill up cups to make quarts, quarts to make gallons. This will help the students better understand the process and how 2 cups equal 1 pint. Using these methods help the information "stick" better in the students' minds, then just doing worksheets. These centers make it possible to learn by doing. Using these centers will also allow for students to problem solve and to help each other solve the problems. These learning centers will be teaching more than just math, they will be helping to teach social skills that can be used later in the work place. The centers will not just teach liquid measurement, but also time, length, conversions, and problem solving. A wide variety of centers are being requested due to the grade range (k-5) and ability levels in my classroom.
My students need math very badly. I can do a lot, but your help with help them really succeed.
