My Students
As a third year teacher and recent TFA alum I am working to create an environment within my classroom to encourage my eclectic group of young scientists to thrive. My students come from all over the world and learn best when content is delivered in a relatable and inclusive manner. A large number of my students are new to the US and are working to not only grasp content but to effectively communicate their ideas to myself and their peers.
These students have a love of learning that shines when they are given the ability to work hands on with manipulatives, project based assignments, and challenging student centered activities.
Science should be fun. It should provide all of my students with a way to not only see the world through their prior knowledge, but to make new connections with content and one another. I am proud to work in a school that gives me the opportunity to not only teach so many inquisitive IB learners, but to also learn from their unique experiences.
My Project
Science content in my classroom is designed to engage all types of learners through a totally interactive experience. My 8th grade scientists will encounter various subject areas to include Matter, Earths' History, Hydrology, and Ecosystems. Working to make subject matter "sticky" can be a challenge, which is why manipulatives are critical. By choosing to donate to my project you will help me to ensure my students are digging into our content through practice with real life applications.
With these materials my students will develop a conceptual understanding of the applications Science has in our everyday lives and use that to increase their overall proficiency while having fun.
This funding will help to maintain our class pet Izzy, a bearded dragon that is referenced during our ecosystems unit and a great tool for driving responsibility (class jobs). Additionally the materials in this project are components of our Matter (chemistry set, goggles), Pathogens (glow germ substance), and Evolution (owl pellets, tweezers) units. I have witnessed how interaction can drive success and with your help I will continue to provide a learning environment conducive to each students development.
