Help me give my students manipulatives necessary to help students learn more about patterns, line of symmetry, angles, polygons, parallel lines, right angles, value, fractions, and other shapes.
My students come to school every day excited about another day of learning. I know this by the smile and the conversations we have each morning. Each day we work hard together to know that as a team we can accomplish great things. With loving and supporting each other we work hard to make sure every student learns and grows together.
I teach third grade in Minnesota where a third of the students are low income.
I have fourteen wonderful students.
The students feel very fortunate and proud to come from a rural community where everyone cares for them and works hard to make a difference in their lives. We live in a town where most students know a majority of the community members. The students show their appreciation by working hard each and every day. We have many great opportunities for students living in a rural community, but students sometimes do miss some of the opportunities that urban areas may see due to funding.
My Project
The other day I went to plan and teach a new math lesson. Pattern blocks would be the perfect piece to teach an effective lesson. Problem number one, I have no pattern blocks.
Pattern blocks will be the key in teaching shapes, parallel lines, lines of symmetry, fractions, adding fractions, subtracting fractions, polygons, and so much more with shapes.
It is really a necessary piece to helping students understand difficult concepts that they need to see to put it into action.
I've always believed seeing is believing. Using math manipulatives help the students to use so many different parts of the brain. It also makes the lesson fun. Who wants to watch the teacher draw a shape on the board? Not many, but having the shape in the student's hand makes the lesson so much more effective.
