I need this Professional Development to improve my knowledge to teach my students. It's a trip of a lifetime to work with other professionals and learn computer science.
Our students are learning how to code and our school needs more opportunities for this. By sending me to this Professional Development I can incorporate more computer science into my classes. I teach at a school of 900 students where computer science and coding have just been added as selections for Related/Fine Arts. Because of this the kids have missed these concepts and are falling behind. Help me help my students and school, by sending me to the Pathfinders Summer Institute in July 2019.
My Project
A week-long in-depth, hands-on Professional Development to learn how to use, code, create and teach the BBC micro: bit. A handheld, programmable micro-computer that can be used for all sorts of cool creations, from robots to musical instruments – the possibilities are endless.
Physical computing devices are designed to engage students in rigorous and fun computer science experiences.
From simple security systems with lights and alarms to dynamic artwork, physical computing empowers students to be makers of tangible projects that are personally meaningful. The goal of this workshop is to take a deep dive into the practice of physical computing. By the end of the week, I will be comfortable in writing code to control the inexpensive micro: bit, both by itself and with add on components.
The PD is centered on a set of physical computing building blocks such as buttons, animation, sensors, light, motion, and music. Each topic will be introduced with a classroom-ready starter activity, with troubleshooting techniques. Also ideas on how to draw students attention to deeper scientific and computational ideas in the context of engaging activities.
