Pastel Painting Like a Pro

My students need a set of artists pastels that have the same number of colors that a professional artist would use.

My Students

Growing up in poverty is an experience from which many people never recover. Everywhere you turn, other people have things that you cannot. You don't know how to escape from poverty's grip. Even worse, your school, like your parents, is too poor to provide you with supplies that you need.

This is a school in the deep south.

The majority of the students live in government projects, with no father present. All that they have ever known is poverty. They have grown up believing that they cannot do anything well. This low self-esteem is the reason for the endless cycle of poverty. If you get to know them, however, you can see through the facade of indifference that they use to insulate themselves. They want to love and be loved. They want to experience happiness and success. But the skills of highly-trained artists seem unattainable to them. They survive by pretending not to care. All that they have ever had is second-best and whatever is left over. Their school is 80 years old. The desks and tables, none of which are matching, are stuff that you would not buy at a yard sale. To them, this is the real world.

My Project

I am requesting a set of professional artists' pastels with 225 colors and values. It's a small thing that I believe can have a big impact. I want these high school students to have the same advantages that professional artists have. No professional artist would try to work with a little kid's set of 12 pastels. The students know this, but just like everything else in their lives, a real set of pastels seems like an impossible dream. They see the beautiful pictures that I show them of pastel paintings done by artists such as Edgar Degas or Daniel Greene. But when they try it using the little kid's 12 color set, they quickly realize the serious disadvantage with which they are faced. But there is no way that we can buy these things. Our art department has not received any funds for the past 2 years.

All of my life I have heard the saying, "Nothing succeeds like success".

I think it could be turned around by saying, "Nothing fails like failure". People become accustomed to succeeding. People also become accustomed to failure. These young people should have the opportunity to experience success. In a few weeks, I want to be able to put up a display of art from young people who now know that it is possible to succeed, as long as you have the right tools and people who believe in you.
