The students at my school come from all different socioeconomic backgrounds. The majority of my students are very fortunate to come from socioeconomically advantaged backgrounds. With the exception of 16% of our students who are socioeconomically disadvantaged. As a result, students come from all different backgrounds with different experiences. Our school is unique in that we believe in supporting the “Whole Child”. We focus on four areas of growth: social/emotional, cognitive, language, and physical. Throughout the year, we pause instruction and run special activities that focus on those areas. Because I am an English teacher, I want to instill a love of reading in my students.
I believe a love for reading will support the “Whole Child”.
Reading will challenge them cognitively, help them develop language, and inspire them to build empathy.
My Project
After reading, Passionate Readers, by Pernille Ripp, I've been inspired to revamp my reading program and reading instruction in my classroom through the use of picture books. My reluctant readers will gravitate towards these books and this will become a stepping stone into a world of life-long reading.
Students need to fall in love with reading before they can become life-long readers.
These books will serve as in inspiration to fall in love with reading. At the same time, I will use these books as a scaffold and mentor text to teach students different reading strategies. In the end, picture books will help my students shape their reading identity.
