This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
I teach third grade in a high-poverty school in Georgia. I serve students with a range of disabilities, including intellectual disabilities, emotional disturbance, autism spectrum disorder, and specific learning disabilities.
A majority of my students are far below grade level.
Over 90% of my students are at least a year behind. Despite the challenges, my third graders particularly love reading and science. They are excited about school and love learning new things. I want to give them the best chance possible.
My Project
I love graphic novels because they help my students get excited about reading. One of the best parts of my job is reaching the students who claim they don't like reading because it is "boring." I am hoping these Dav Pilkey books and Who Was books will grab their attention and spur them to read more.
Many of my students struggle with reading, and research has shown that one of the best ways to make improvements in reading is to read for enjoyment.
I am hoping that Dog Man and stories about Jane Goodall, Walt Disney, and Michael Jordan will help my students become stronger readers as well as enhance their love for learning.
