Help me give my students a series of hands-on experiences in genetics and heredity, and how the process of natural selection allows species to survive and reproduce.
My group of students is a very diverse group with a variety of educational needs and backgrounds. My students arrived at my school from various parts of the world including Africa, Asia, and Central America. The majority of my students are learning English as their second language while also learning classroom content. Some are learning English while also facing learning disabilities and/or social and emotional disabilities.
My students have an uphill climb, but that does not deter them from giving their best and maintaining a positive outlook on education.
My students are extremely self-conscious about their academics but still try their hardest. Their strongest desire is to fit in with the other students in the building and to be seen as "normal" middle schoolers. The majority of my students come from low-income households, and it is a struggle for them to afford the most basic school supplies.
My Project
This project will provide my students with hands-on experience within our life science unit that focuses on genetics, heredity and natural selection. As the students are exploring genetics and heredity, the students will be able to analyze physical traits and how they are passed from parent to offspring. They will practice calculating the probability of specific traits being inherited by offspring. The students will be able to take that knowledge and apply it by using natural selection kits. The students will get to analyze how specific traits allow organisms to survive and reproduce in different environments, which drives the formation of different ecosytsems and habitats.
