Calling all markers, colored pencils, crayons, and pastels! Help me make eighth-grade math more interesting and engaging. Math and art are incredibly related but difficult to connect. I began making this connection with my students this fall by taking them to the Brooklyn Museum of Art to see an exhibit on signs and symbols in Egyptian art. In the museum they were given drawing pencils and drawing paper to illustrate the math they found in art. They loved it. I am requesting art supplies for my eighth-grade math classroom in order to continue making the math-art connection. My students were clearly excited by being able to blend their creativity with their mathematical understanding. Math-art activities peak the interest in students who in other ways feel turned off by math. By illustrating geometric shapes, adding color to their graphs and charts, making tesselations, and putting patterns down in colorful form on paper, these students make math come to life. Unfortunately, supplies at my school are scarce and hard to access. I am asking for your help in donating art supplies so that this scarcity does not hinder my students' learning. I would like to request one class set of crayons, one class set of markers, one class set of colored pencils, and five boxes of pastels to make a class art set to share with my three classes of seventh-grade math students. I know that it seems a privilege to have art supplies in a mathematics classroom, but I have seen the amazing way that math can enrich and stimulate mathematical minds. Please help my students get the most out of their year in my seventh-grade math class by donating this class set of art supplies.
