Particle Accelerators for Nuclear Chemistry Inquiry

My students need these items to create particle accelerators for class. Students will create atom nuclei using the large magnets to hold the smaller marble magnets (protons and neutrons).

My Students

My students come from a variety of backgrounds. Students in my chemistry classes are excited to learn. They use the lab often and get hands-on experience that will put them above their peers. My colleagues and I strive to provide more concrete experiences rather than theoretical ones so that students can engage in chemistry.

These students are eager to create knowledge, not just learn about it.

Chemistry students get to design lab experiences and apply those activities to their lives outside of school.

I love how my students are willing to be hands on. Whenever I have the opportunity to get them out of their seats they jump at it. I love that they respect the lab, and look forward to doing more experiments that relate their everyday lives.

My Project

Students will get to have a hands-on experience by actually colliding their atoms and counting the "nuclear decay" given off. With this, students can take the theoretical and turn it into the actual. Students will understand nuclear chemistry in a world that needs new kinds of energy resources.

Students will build their own atoms using the large and small magnets.

They will then propel them in a PVC style particle accelerator and see how nuclear decay is formed when atoms collide.

Throughout the unit, students will learn about nuclear chemistry and it's history. Nuclear chem is often misunderstood. This unit will help students understand how nuclear chem is used in everyday life.
