This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
Our school serves 6th through 8th grade students of color in one of the most dynamic urban areas in our nation. However, the achievement gap between our students and others still persists at an alarming rate. All of the students we serve are considered economically disadvantaged. The community around us is riddled with violence and crime.
However, we are striving to provide our scholars with different outlets to express themselves in more positive manners.
Yoga and meditation have been proved to be effective calming mechanisms.
Our athletic teams provide critical opportunities for students to use their talents outside of the typical school day. The experience of working with a team and utilizing time outside of school hours to be productive supports their overall growth and development.
My Project
The balls, yoga mats, hoops and other active play equipment will make a difference because it will give students the opportunity to be engaged in many activities. It will give the female students a chance to participate with hula hoops, double dutch, and even dodge ball.
The yoga mats will be used in the restorative room where we are transitioning from putative to restorative practices.
In this room, we will allow our students to express themselves through reflection, expression, empowerment, strength and exercise. Our students will be able to verbally express themselves in a positive manner and be able to use coping mechanism to enhance behavior.
