Part Two- Setting up our Meeting Circle!

My students need low benches at our meeting circle! This has proven to be an excellent teaching tool for maintaining attention and body control!

My Students

I work in a title 1 school with an extended day program.I have fifteen students this year which includes three students who also spend time in a special education setting. At this developmental level, we are working daily with students to establish their skills surrounding maintaining attention on the speaker, sustaining patience and calm bodies while working on academic skills and sharing.

With an extended learning time, our academic day goes beyond our standard reading, writing, and mathematics.

I have utilized the extra learning time with my students to explore various science and social studies topics.

We also work very closely together in both small groups and whole class learning.

We spend a large portion of our day at our meeting circle. We read aloud together, play math games, practice writing, and share our life experiences. We also play social games, sing songs, and develop social skills for working together.

My Project

I have observed my young learners have difficulty sitting at our circle with their bodies in control. They struggle to stay still, stay upright, while controlling the materials in their lap, and maintain focus on the speaker.

During a professional development day, I observed a teacher who's meeting circle included low benches for students to share and sit at while attending the meeting circle.

She uses them both as their seats and they can turn to use them as a work space! I'm asking for multiple benches to accommodate all of my students.

I am excited to have such a space at our circle. This will be helpful to their developmental learning!
