Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
A child's reading ability is the number one gatekeeper between my students and a successful future. In order to achieve, they must become proficient readers. How? Through dedication and practice! What can thoughtful donors do to help? Provide motivation!
Though we are only a few weeks into the school year, I constantly remind my students how lucky I am to have, in my opinion, the best class in the world!
My students show up every day with an eagerness to learn all there is to know. My students cover a wide range of ability, but nevertheless, consistently apply themselves to be the "best version" of themselves. I am proud to be their teacher! Our school houses a challenging demographic. When I moved to upper grades, I was nervous about the students I would work with during the upcoming school year. I was blessed with 30 of the most thoughtful, caring, and passionate students. They amaze me each day with their creativity and unique ideas.
My Project
Because I am new to upper grades, I have spent much of my summer acquiring books to help students gain access to titles that will leave them begging for more. My goal is to inspire students to read. Reading can be enjoyable if you open your mind and accept reading as a form of entertainment.
Additionally, to increase students' comprehension abilities, I run literature circles where students select a "job" and participate in discussions and converse about a book they are all reading. I feel that by adding the presently popular titles including The Maze Runner, Ender's Game, The City of Ember, and Insurgent, (the sequel to the popular Divergent) to our classroom library, students will be motivated to pick up a great book!
Exposure to dystopian titles that are reminiscent of The Hunger Games will leave my students begging for more! Luckily, this genre is rapidly expanding, so they will have plenty of books to sink their teeth into following these popular reads.
A lifelong love and appreciation of books should be a top priority for educators.
If we teach our students how to love reading, rather than force it, we set them up for success. Reading is the gatekeeper to high academic achievement, and ultimately, college admissions. Please help me tear down the gates one good read at a time!
