Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

I teach 6th grade language arts in a high poverty school with a predominantly Hispanic population.

My students stare blankly at blank sheets of paper. They are paralyzed when asked to write an essay. Students are expected to produce a 5 paragraph persuasive essay about a topic of their choosing. I would like to have them use post-it notes to ease them into writing.

Students will jot their ideas on separate post-its and post them on the parking lot. Other students will be invited to make comments or pose questions on post-its. This will enable the writer to make his or her argument stronger. Ultimately, students will be able to physically rearrange their written thoughts, responding to others' questions and comments, into one logical essay. Post-it pads will give the students the chance to WRITE their thoughts (something they need to practice), and give the teacher time to finish lessons.

You will make it possible for my students to take ownership of their own learning, and provide them the opportunity to practice writing with a fun and novel tool.
