My students need Where Does the Garbage Go?, sea life specimen center, other nature books, stylus sticks, latex gloves, oil removal products, and a GoPro bundle.
Ripped from the headlines: as much as 100,000 gallons of oil spilled into the ocean from a ruptured pipeline off the California coast. How will this disaster affect the creatures who make the ocean their home?
Hola, and welcome to my proposal inspired by "Beach Buddies" to support the environmental education of energetic and enthusiastic first graders who represent five different languages.
These children attend a high poverty school in an inland district without a single elementary art, P.E., music, library, or computer teacher; in a state that is #1 in prison spending and #49 in education spending; in a country with more and more for-profit schools tapping into the $500 billion public education budget.
My Project
Inspired by "Beach Buddies," we will learn about the oil spill's impact upon the ocean, about our trash's impact upon our park, and what we can do about it.
In part 1 of this project, we will hear and read about the recent oil spill, study our new books about ocean life, examine our specimens, simulate an oil spill, and using oil absorbing sheets, cotton balls and swabs, experience the efforts required to remove this substance from surfaces.
In part 2, armed with stylus sticks and gloves, we will visit our adjoining park, note the impact of human and canine activity upon our home environment, and read books about our backyard. Though we cannot travel to the beach to collect trash, we can collect, analyze, and evaluate the garbage from our campus and park and then create slogans, jingles, songs, posters, or commercials to encourage awareness about recycling, reducing, refusing, and reusing, all recorded by the GoPro.
Thank you for reading this proposal for books, specimens, swabs, sheets, sticks, gloves, and a GoPro to increase general and scientific knowledge, and to raise young students' awareness of their impact upon their environment, locally and globally.
