Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Refugees. Children of immigrants. And 5th generation Tri-Citians. Although my students come from diverse backgrounds and experiences, Ulises, Natalie, Dalton, Zin Mar Oo, and more all share a common drive to positively affect their community through government and civic engagement
My students first learned about Washington DC and civic engagement through my personal experience. I grew up in Spokane, WA and attended a similar program when I was in middle school. The experience completely changed the trajectory of my life. It inspired me to attend my dream school, Georgetown. After graduating I returned back to my home state to advocate for all students to have access to a high-quality education. After telling my students about my experience, they were inspired and were motivated to fundraise and work to achieve their goal of attending a similar program in the capital. They researched around our community and saw that our school was one of a few schools where this was not available. So they asked me if we could work together to create an equal opportunity.
This program is not a typical one week in Washington, DC trip. Rather students learn invaluable life skills that make them successful now and in the future by creating a foundation of community engagement. All year long students have been busy fundraising - learning entrepreneurial skills such as customer service, marketing, sales, bookkeeping, and teamwork. In the process of traveling to Washington, DC, students will learn how to travel and become more independent. For many, this will be the first time they will travel beyond their hometown. While in DC, students will learn skills needed to become active citizens by analyzing the role and purpose of government, participating in a Mock Congress, debating, meeting and engaging with people from across the country, and understanding the rights of all Americans. Their development doesn't end in DC; they will create and present a citizenship plan for how they will continue to engage and improve our community when they return
In Their Own Words
Our project idea is to go to Washington DC to explore the famous sites there and to discover the American story. Our goal is for every student that is signed up to raise $2,000 from fundraising at the games, school dances, and other activities.
We will, with our teacher's help, become leaders by bringing this project to life to learn responsibility. This responsibility can then be passed to our peers and younger siblings. Moreover, during our program, we will learn about how to become active leaders in our communities, creating a citizenship plan for how we want to improve our community when we get back from Washington, DC.
This project is important to our community and us because it will help us become future leaders. It's our first chance to interact with people from across the country. This will make the history we've studied come alive. It will encourage others to learn more about D.C. and become active citizens in our community. Please support us. Your contribution is an investment in our community's future - ensuring that this hands-on experience is available to all, regardless of financial circumstances.
