There are 15 PreK students in my class who represent several different cultures. Two of the students have already been identified as having a special need; however, that does not keep them from interacting with their peers and learning new skills and information.
The students in my class need a variety of books in their native language.
This will give parents more opportunities to read with their child at home.
My students are bilingual which makes it easier for them to talk with classmates who are native English speakers. Although I want my students to learn and speak English at school, I feel that it is also important for them to maintain their native languages.
I need books that are written in Spanish, Vietnamese, and Urdu. Our PreK program requires that at parents read at least 100 books at home with their child. We provide books for parents to read at home. If the parents are unable to read books in English, we encourage them to look at the pictures and make up a story with their child.
By providing some books in the child's native language, parents are able to read and ask questions while they are reading.
Many of the parents are able to speak English, but have difficulties reading books in English. Listening to books in their native language helps students understand and comprehend what they hear. As children learn to comprehend in their native language, they will learn to comprehend better when they hear English.
