Help me give my students the resources they need to increase Phonemic Awareness.
My students are between the ages of four and five. They are just starting their school experience and they all have a great love of learning.
This age group requires visuals, small group instruction, creative play, and manipulatives.
We are a Title I School and PHBAO (Predominately Hispanic, Black, or other. Many of these students come to school without the basic foundational skills needed to succeed, not only academically, but socially and emotionally as well.
Every student learns through different modalities and it is important to provide a rich environment that is a component of the curriculum.
Parent and Family Engagement helps extend teaching outside of the classroom. It helps children perform better when they are in school. It is essential for parents to be engaged and to be able to support the learning that happens at school.
I would like to increase "Phonemic Awareness" through Parent and Family Engagement.
DIBELS (Dynamic Indicators of Basic Literacy Skills) is an assessment used three times a year in elementary schools to monitor and increase student academic achievement. It is important because it is the primary predictor of early reading and spelling success.
The problem lies with the lack of education and information provided to parents. These workshops will give parents an insight look at Early Literacy Skills. They will be held over several months throughout the school year in order to consistently engage families.
We will build "Beginning Sound" puzzles and parents will learn simple games they can play at home with everyday household items to increase First Sound Fluency (FSF).
Parents will take home a laminated "Phonemic Awareness" practice book that they can use every night at home. These books will be color coordinated by levels of difficulty.
level 1- CVC Words: cat, hat, ten, men, pig, fig, mop, hop, sun, bun
Level 2- Words with Beginning Blends: bl, br, cl, cr, dr, fl, fr, gl, gr
Level 3- Words that contain common consonant digraphs such as:
ch (church), ch (school), ng (king), ph (phone), sh (shoe), th (then),
th (think), and wh (wheel). These practice books can be easily adapted for multiple grade.
Parents will learn how to Progress Monitor their child at home to measure and increase student academic achievement. A Progress Monitor Score Sheet will be provided to count and record the total number of errors made.
