My Students
“The Calling of The Humanities is to make us truly human in the best sense of the word” —J. Irwin Miller. At the end of the school year I want my students to not only be great leaders within my classroom but to become so liberated that they become active citizens of the world.
My students are scholars with so much grit it scares me.
I teach at a low-income/high-needs school right in the heart of Detroit. My scholars are overcoming every obstacle to make sure that the area code in which they grow up in does not determine their success.
My scholars are always eager to learn and grow in their understanding of Humanities and I just want to make sure I provide them with the right materials and resources to do so. I want to make sure that my classroom has all the resources my students need to be successful.
My Project
I am trying to improve parent involvement within in our school and increase the attendance rate amongst our students. The Primary function of the Parent & Community Engagement Center will be to communicate with and assist families. This will in turn benefit my students' social and academic growth.
This endeavour is important because bottom-line is family and community engagement is a vital part of a truly successful school.
Schools, parents, and the community should work together to promote the health, well-being, and learning of all of our students. But unfortunately this rarely just happens, it must be intentionally designed and done on purpose, with purpose & for purpose. We need to provide a home within our schools that welcomes parents, community members and students alike.
The Parent & Community Engagement Center will provide the Community, our Parents, and Visitors a welcoming environment where the Center will provide educational support, support services and be an informational source to increase knowledge capacity to correlate with student achievement.
We will have certified professionals come in every month educating our parents and community members on things like “twenty-first century parent skills” such as the importance of positive parent-child communication, and how to identify risk factors – drugs, gang involvement, etc. The center will also feature a Fully-functioning Washer & Dryer within the school to increase student attendance and student morale. We will install 4 fully-functioning desktop computers for parents and community members to utilize in their efforts to find jobs, research best .practices, academic resources for students.
