This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Joyce Meyer said, “If you are facing a new challenge or being asked to do something that you have never done before don’t be afraid to step out. You have more capability than you think you do but you will never see it unless you place a demand on yourself for more “ While teaching freshman Algebra, one of the most difficult things I have come across is trying to help students redefine the idea of what it means to be successful in math.

My goal is to help students change their mindset from I can’t do, to I can do!

A large majority of the students in my school receive free and reduced lunch. They come from all different socioeconomic backgrounds. Many of my students say they have never been “successful” in math prior to coming to my classroom.

One of the first things I tell my students is my definition of success. Success is not being perfect at everything, it’s doing better then you’ve done before. If I can teach my students to persevere, break down, and think critically about any problem they face then success is sure to follow wherever they go!

My Project

The supplies I am requesting will help fill two great needs of my classroom. In my class, students use lap boards or communicators to show there work during checks for understanding. We are always in need of expo markers for students to use in addition to markers needed for the teacher. The whiteboard will allow my co-teacher and I to more easily pull small groups to remediate on topics and parallel teach.

The donations to this project will help to improve my students' understanding of and proficiency in various Algebra topics by enabling my class to be more accommodating to the different types of learners.
