Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Pen-pal Novel Study aims to increase enthusiasm for and skill in reading by pairing a fourth grade class (Tarkington) with a fifth grade class (Princeton) in a year-long novel study project. Each fourth grader will be paired with a fifth grade reading partner and will correspond with this partner through letters, e-mail and on-line blogs. The partnership will be both social and academic in nature; students will get to know one another on a personal level while discussing the texts that they are reading simultaneously. This will allow for heightened interest in the text (reading for purpose) as well as opportunities to express text to self connections on a regular basis, deepening understanding. Students will correspond throughout the year while studying five novels, and the project will culminate in an in-person character party at which reading partners from both schools meet, impersonate a character selected from one of the six novels, exchange artifacts, and write and perform character scenes.
Tarkington and Princeton are both diverse Chicago Public Schools with over 86% of the population receiving free or reduced lunch. Approximately 64 students will participate in the project each year (books will be reused each year). The teachers who will implement this project (myself and a colleague) are teachers of self-contained 4th and 5th grade classrooms.
This proposal is written in three parts in an attempt to secure funding for a total of 12 class sets of books (6 for each classroom).
Our hope is to put copies of great literature in the hands of each child, and to entice and engage them further with the excitement of corresponding with a newfound friend about intriguing characters.
