My students with special needs would like fidgets, games, comfortable furniture, and sensory items to help deal with so much loss. I am an Education Specialist (special education teacher) at a middle school. Well, right now, I am traveling up the hill, through our town that is no longer, to get to a school above this town because there isn’t a special education teacher at all that can go up there.
Before the fire, I worked together to help kids with special needs succeed in their general education classrooms by teaching them games to help build their working memory.
We had board games, dice, cards, fun math fidgets, sensory items, legos, blocks, and many brain puzzles for them to hold in their hands. Our kids have very high Adverse Childhood Experiences ACEs as it is, before the fire. Often they were unable to access academics. These “toys” were great because they helped us get to the bottom of the student’s issue for that day as they could sit and play with a fidget first, talk to us, and then get to work if they could.
Please help my students, colleagues, and I rebuild our supplies. As the world knows, our beautiful town of Paradise and many of our schools were destroyed by fire. Most of our 6th grade team lost their classrooms, and our 7th and 8th grade classrooms and supplies are not available to us for the foreseeable future.
Board games that help engage learning, shiny, new supplies, and math manipulatives will help my students with special needs, greatly!
Thank you so much for donating to our students. We have had such an out pouring of love and donations that we all continue to be flabbergasted with all the kindness. We continue to tell our students that the whole world is helping them. This is a fact. Thank you, donors. You are truly teaching the students about kindness and generosity.
