Our students come from a wide range of cultural and economic backgrounds. Our school is over 40 years old in a predominantly older, established neighborhood. We are a Title I campus trying to meet all of the challenges of our students’ needs.
Our students love to move and are eager to get class started when they arrive in physical education.
Most of them go above and beyond what is asked of them. We find that most will strive to acquire the knowledge they can about health fitness. Therefore, we try to offer experiences that allow for full involvement of all students.
My Project
With the parachute we will teach cooperation and team building skills while having fun and being physically active. The students will engage in parachute games and challenges to use what they have learned.
Use of the parachute not only will strengthen cooperative and team skills, but will also provide opportunities for making what the students are learning in the classroom come to life – to make it real.
The scooters will be utilized with the parachute activities.
For STEM, the students will learn how to create waves of different sizes and shapes. We will be able to discuss wave heights and lengths. We can discuss the creation of tsunamis. We can teach about the air that is all around us but cannot be seen. We will also learn about high and low pressure weather systems – what they would look like if we could see them. We can also discuss the difference between rotation and revolution.
The scooters can be used to play a parachute game called Sharks. While playing the game we can discuss the food chain, and about predator and prey.
For math, we will help students understand addition and subtraction. We can help the students visualize fractions by using the different color wedges of the parachute.
These are just a few of the lessons we can do all while having fun and keeping students active.
