This is my first year teaching as a middle school ELA teacher, and---wow!---has it been a bumpy ride! However, one constant I have are the amazing students that I get to see every day! Each student shows up daily with a smiling face, excited to learn!
Many of my students come from low income families and do not have many resources at home for learning.
Many students have expressed an interest in having enough books to have their own copies to use so they could bring it home and back to school rather than having to share with students from other class periods. Their love for reading and learning has me motivated to help make their wishes come true!
My Project
With everything going on in the world, students are searching for a constant in their lives. We had already began our class novels of "The Lightning Thief" and "Tangerine" when our school was shut down for at least a few weeks. The questions I was most asked were: "Are we going to keep reading when we come back?" "Can we read while we are at home?" and "What happens if we can't come back and we don't get to finish our book together?"
Having enough books to send home to students so we can continue the units that go along with our novels can be the good news that students and teachers are searching for.
I currently only have enough books for a single class set which means my students are sharing books with other students. With this project, I would have enough books for all students and would be able to continue teaching my students via virtual or in-person learning.
