This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
I teach 17 first grade students in a high poverty school in Washington, DC, where over 99% of our students receive free or reduced-price lunch. The children's needs are very diverse, as they operate at varying skill levels, and it is our goal at my school to find resources to make sure everyone's needs are met. We also always need basic supplies to keep our classroom running smoothly. Students' and families' abilities to contribute are limited so we look to donors to fill in the gaps.
My Project
We are busy bees in first grade! In order to display all my students' hard work, we need some new bulletin board borders. We have a few boards inside the room and a huge one in the hallway. The borders will help create a display for the students' writing.
We do lots of work with hands on materials in first grade, and cardstock holds up much, much better than regular paper!
The cardstock is crucial anytime I make a paper resource that students will use in multiple groups over several (or many) days.
The chart paper is important because my budding readers love to practice their skills. I write known songs or poems on the chart paper for all of us to be able to read together.
