As a teacher in a large and expanding school district, my students are faced with several challenges both in and out of the classroom. Despite the many challenges they face, I am looking to enrich my students' learning experiences by providing opportunities to connect Fine Arts with STEM related curriculum.
My students love to challenge themselves each day.
They are excited to explore the world of art through traditional and digital media platforms. My students are also highly interested in learning how new skills which can translate into multiple content areas. They take pride in their efforts and are willing to challenge their minds for the sake of pushing the boundaries of what they can do.
My Project
The use of paper is essential to any classroom. Understanding where that paper comes from can help students discover how engineers utilize different materials to manufacture various products. My students will explore recycling used paper into a new product as well as exploring how to incorporate other materials such as dryer lint or organic items into new kinds of papers. Once the paper is formed, however, it must go through a drying process. During the drying phase, paper can buckle and wrinkle, making the end product hard to function properly. A paper press would allow my students to fully process the paper they are making into usable products by pressing their work into smooth sheets. By being able to produce a functioning paper product, students can then explore how to apply the design and engineering process which is utilized in real world application.
By donating to our project, you will be assisting in giving my students a more authentic hands on STEM based learning experience.
Students will be able to utilize professional practices which they can apply towards college and career readiness. As students use newer technology, such as computers and tablets to research how paper is made, you will be providing an opportunity for students to experience older technology still used in the applied arts today.
